A Bold New Age

 By Thai Nguyen, CEO

A month ago I watched a PBS program where the main theme was ‘if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.’  We all know that the transformation from the industrial age to that of high technology has been accelerating in recent years.  Accordingly, the term ‘paradigm shift’, which means changing the viewpoint, is not strange jargon any more.

Last week, as I watched my manufacturing team working through a kaizen session and struggling with a particular issue, I found myself thinking of that theme from the PBS program while the Lean Enterprise consultant from SEA was offering a different perspective to the team.  The consultant’s outsider’s view sparked the remembrance of a statement from Albert Einstein, ‘the significant problems we face cannot be solved with the same level of thinking we used when we created them.’  In this case, our consulting partner presented an out-of-the-box approach and my team was enthusiastically in tune with it in finding a solution outside of our paradigm within the lean enterprise concept.

HiTEM is at a juncture to adopt this approach all throughout the company.  The ‘lean thinking’ we are practicing is certainly a thought provoking business philosophy.  This year, Northrop Grumman is mentoring us to accelerate our lean initiatives.  I am encouraged to see the fruits we are bearing through incremental improvement.  However, I continue to push to accelerate the radical process improvement that will come along with it.  I am convinced that the latest kaizen session will bring outstanding results.  This is a time when creativity and break-through ideas are needed more than anything else.  We all should be on board with this coming-of-age approach.
